Response Code 41: Lost card, pick up
Reported lost by the cardholder. The issuer wants the card confiscated.
What Does Code 41 Mean?
Response code 41 means the cardholder has reported this card as lost to their issuing bank. The issuer has flagged the account and will decline all transactions. In a physical retail setting, the merchant would be asked to confiscate the card.
In subscription billing, code 41 typically appears when a cardholder reports their card lost and the issuer blocks it before a replacement arrives. The replacement card will have a different number, so retrying the old number will never succeed. Account updater services (like Visa Account Updater or Mastercard ABU) can sometimes provide the new card number automatically.
Why You Should Not Retry
Never retry. Attempting to charge a lost card may trigger fraud alerts.
Common Causes
